Standing on the Promises

“Magic trick: to make people disappear, ask them to fulfill their promises.” - Mason Cooley

Habitat’s promise to the future is to put God's love in action by bringing people together to build homes communities and hope.

The people in this picture are standing on a promise. The roof is a testimony: the promise is being kept by people who didn’t have to be here to work, but they promised they would, so they did. They are standing on their promise.

Every Saturday morning, week after week, rain or shine, heat or cold, people continue to show up and keep their promises to help build homes, communities, and hope.

That’s really kind of amazing, when you stop and think about it.

As the political campaigns are waged and rage on, the needle on our cynicism gauge may get stuck in the red zone. The more we hear, the less we believe. All these promises! Who could possibly be gullible enough to believe even half of them? Is anybody’s word any good any more?

But drive by the Habitat for Humanity construction site on Saturday morning and you'll see college kids and retirees and church groups and corporate types hammering, digging, carrying plywood and shingles and painting, and you realize that nobody is making them do this. They just promised they’d do it and they did. Because they believe that everybody deserves a decent place to live- enough that they keep promises so it can happen.

The new homeowners stand on their promises. Habitats all over the world stand on their promises. God is proud of their promises.

It’s really kind of amazing, if you stop and think about it.
