Curb Appeal

There’s a commercial on the radio that asks, “Do you have a family member who can no longer be left alone?”My answer is always the same: “Yes. Me.”

The number of scrapes and bruises I accumulate over the course of a day is truly astounding. My wife is always asking, “What happened to your arm?” “Where did you get that bruise on your ankle?” “Did you know your chin is bleeding?”

My answer is always the same: “Don’t worry about it. But the truth is, I usually have no idea what happened. I am always bumping against things or tripping over things, and unless the blood is actually out where I can see it, I usually don’t worry about it. Actually, this is a hereditary condition. My mother has it, too, and so does my daughter. (In fact, my daughter has a t-shirt that reads, “I’m NOT clumsy. The ground just hates me.”)

As you might have guessed, I’m not the kind of guy who spends a lot of time in front of a mirror. I figure my face isn’t going to improve any if I spend time looking at it, so I don’t bother.

But appearances as important. I have a realtor friend who is always talking about “curb appeal.” Your house has got to look good from the street for people to be interested in it. (She also keeps a fresh pot of coffee brewing and bakes chocolate chip cookies while she’s having an open house, because the olfactory sense is very influential in decision-making. That’s kind of manipulative, I think, but she shares the cookies with me so I’ve never said anything.)

Habitat has curb appeal. We deliver on our promises- and more. We say we’re going to build homes so low-income families can afford to purchase a home, and we deliver on that. We teach them how to own a home before they move in. We build our homes for cash- we don’t have any debt. We do more besides- our Acts of Kindness program completes minor beautification (painting, weeding, lawn mowing, window wiping etc.) with residents who are incapable of completing the maintenance themselves. Our Neighborhood Revitalization initiative built a playground in a disadvantaged area in 2015, and hosted a Christmas gift giveaway there. We give away backpacks with school supplies in the fall.

Habitat for Humanity International has been named “Brand of the Year” in the social services nonprofit category based on the 2016 Harris Poll EquiTrend® Equity Score. This is the second consecutive year we’ve has been recognized for our strength in brand equity. In addition, Habitat for Humanity earned the distinction of being named the “Most Loved” and “Most Trusted” brand within its category this year. (

Our curb appeal is that we keep our promises, and when you get up close, you see that we do more. Not to brag, but it’s important for our supporters to know that we deliver, that they don’t have anything to be embarrassed about when they give.

If you’d like to make a donation, you can do it at this website, on the “DONATE” tab. If you’d like to volunteer, go to the “GET INVOLVED” tab and choose “Volunteer.” You can sign up for:
