our roots
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 on a community farm in southern Georgia as a grassroots effort. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit; we can be found in nearly 1,200 communities throughout the United States and almost 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home.
Habitat homeowners pay an affordable mortgage after they help build their own homes alongside volunteers. Through financial assistance, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives. Through shelter, we empower.

what we do
Habitat for Humanity Greater Fresno Area does not build houses for families; we facilitate a partnership with families who demonstrate need, the ability to pay a mortgage, and a willingness to partner in the construction of their home. This partnership engages community supporters who join future homeowners in the building process by providing financial and in-kind support for construction supplies and materials.
Homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (“sweat equity”) into building their Habitat house. Once complete, they pay back an affordable loan.
Since 1985, Habitat Greater Fresno Area has improved housing conditions for over 1,000 families. Located in the San Joaquin Valley, the heart of our nation, Habitat's success not only impacts residents in Fresno and Madera counties, but the state as well.
global influence
Habitat for Humanity Greater Fresno Area's work extends well beyond its jurisdiction. Our affiliate is committed to furthering Habitat for Humanity International’s mission to eliminate poverty housing worldwide! To this end, our affiliate tithes 10% of its unrestricted revenue toward building affordable homeownership opportunities in Nicaragua, Mexico, and Ethiopia. Together, globally, we are changing lives.
non-proselytizing policy
Habitat for Humanity will not proselytize. Nor will HFHGFA work with entities or individuals who insist on proselytizing as part of their work with HFHGFA. This means that HFHGFA will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must adhere to or convert to a particular faith or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.
